Feeding Time

Bulldogs are one of the smallest large breed dogs that struggle with rapid growth from 12 weeks to 8 months.  We often see developmental issues when they are on a high energy (protein and fat) diet with too high of calcium.  The goal is to promote steady slow growth to ensure proper joint development.

We have found a combination that works great for our puppies nutrition.  We ask that all puppies stay on the current nutrition recommended plan to ease the transition to your home.  Please communicate with us if you want to alter the nutrition plan.

E4L Puppy is designed to support what matters most in the early months: a stable gut, strong immune development, and healthy digestion. Puppies are building their microbiome in real time, and E4L helps fill the gaps that food alone can’t consistently cover—using targeted probiotics and bioactive ingredients to promote better stool quality, nutrient absorption, and overall resilience as they grow.

We aren’t huge fans of treats for many reasons including too many added calories, upsetting the digestive system and causing diarrhea.  Our first choice is always using puppy food/adult food kibble as “treats” or cut up fresh fruits and vegetables.  BUT with all that being said we do approve of single ingredient treats! We aren’t brand picky but personally use these!

We love slow feeding bowls!  Every bulldog owner should have one of these.  It does exactly what it is supposed to; slows down eating.  Eating too fast can increase the risk of bloat and asperated pneumonia which are both extremely serious.  We love this specific bowl because it is stainless steel and the center cylinder is large enough that a bulldog really has to work for their food.

One of the first steps in preparing for the arrival of your new bulldog puppy is purchasing a puppy crate.  Here at Bruiser Bulldogs, we are big advocates for crate training, and selecting a proper crate is naturally a very important first step.

This Midwest Lifestages crate is my all time favorite and we have used this product since we started breeding bulldogs.  I love the two door option on this crate that allows for easy access and flexible placement within a room.  This is one of the more durable crates I have come across and at 36″ with a removable divider will provide appropriate space for your bulldog puppy all the way through its golden years.

We love crate covers and they really do work! A crate cover is a great tool for creating a cozy and separate space for your new puppy.  Bedtime, especially the first few nights can be hard but with the help of a cover the crate becomes more like a little cozy den.  The cover also helps to block the view of family members walking around which can cause your puppy to want to join in and start wining.

We started using the Yotache crate cover it is a wonderful compliment to the Midwest Lifestages crate.  We love this crate cover because of its tight fit and high quality polyester material.  The two door cover option allows for easy access to both doors of our Midwest Lifestages crate.

Just like the crate cover, a sound machine can help to create a wonderful sleeping environment for your bulldog.  The sounds will help to drown out the noises of your home, which just like movement can keep your puppy from getting a good nights sleep.  The sound machine is something I highly recommend to get through the first few nights. I use ours all the time!

The unique feature that drew us to the Homedics white noise sound machine was its “continuous noise” options that allows for white noise the entire night.  While many noise machines have an auto shutoff with timer, the Homedics sound machine allows for constant white noise to ensure a full night sleep.  Our bulldogs specifically love to listen to the seashore sound option for bedtime.

The only item we recommend in the crate while crate training is a fleece blanket.  I love fleece because it washes and dry very easily.  I would grab a few of these. At least two but three is best! When one is in the wash (which it will be while potty training) you have extras to use.  You will want to leave the nice doggy bed in the living room while you potty train and use these in the crate. Trust me… you will thank me later!

I use the Pawz Road fleece blanket for all of my bulldog snuggle needs!  I have stayed with this particular fleece blanket because of its durability.  These blankets can really take a beating!  They maintain their high quality even after the wear and tear of bulldog puppy love and constant washing machine trips.
